Ministry of Education and Xch’ool Ixim Sign an Interinstitutional Agreement

Strengthening Education and Cultural Identity in Alta Verapaz

We are proud to announce that on February 17, 2025, the Q’eqchi’ Association Xch’ool Ixim signed an Interinstitutional Agreement with the Ministry of Education of Guatemala to support Primary Education and Curriculum Development in the department of Alta Verapaz.

At Xch’ool Ixim, we reaffirm our commitment to the children of rural primary schools by promoting the integration, development, and strengthening of education and Q’eqchi’ Maya cultural identity.

We are grateful to the Minister of Education, Anabella Giracca, for supporting this educational process.

This important curriculum project was made possible with support from the Tinker Foundation. This project support will benefit 44 rural villages without access to quality education in Alta Verapaz, and it will impact:

  • 2,700 children providing access to a more contextualized and culturally meaningful education
  • 120 teachers involved in creating culturally relevant methodologies
  • 90 parents contributing local community context to the local Maya curriculum
  • 15 elders and community leaders contributing to the ancestral cultural content

With this agreement, we remain committed to ensuring access to quality education and a future full of opportunities and hope for the children of our region.

With this agreement, we continue to advance towards an educational model that reflects the linguistic and cultural realities of our community, ensuring that education becomes a tool for transformation and pride for Q’eqchi’ youth.

With this agreement, we will develop the first Q’eqchi’ Maya curriculum and have an opportunity to integrate Maya cultural education into the primary school curriculum.

With this agreement, Maya ancestors have a voice.

Together, building a future with identity!
