Executive Director of Xchool Ixim, Fredy Oxom, was given in october 2023 the Distinguished Alumni Award from Methodist University, his alma mater, for an outstanding voluntary or other public service on a local, state, national or global level.
Along with other four students and one faculty member, they were recognized at the Alumni Awards Ceremony held on october 28.
Fredy Oxom is from the Maya Q’eqchi’ community in Guatemala. He won Methodist’s annual Kathryn Davis Peace Project competition for his proposal to expand secondary education in an indigenous Guatemalan village. After Methodist, Fredy graduated with a master’s degree in bilingual and intercultural education from San Carlos University, Guatemala and is now working towards a doctorate in education, aslo from San Carlos University.
Fredy works as the advisor to the Viceminister of Bilingual and Intercultural Education in Guatemala where he works to improve to irmpvoe education programming for more than 1.2 million children in the indigenous Maya Communities. Fredy previously worked for Inter-American Dialogue and UNICEF.
